There seems to be a common misconception that gun control does not exist in the United States. However, gun control statistics indicate otherwise. By listening to some gun control advocates, you would think that contemporary American society were like the Old West, with many common citizens walking around with loaded handguns and dual holsters. While some states allow citizens to carry concealed firearms, it is illegal to do so without a concealed carry permit. Gun control is a hotly contested issue that has gripped the United States public discourse, with both sides voicing their opinions with great fervor. At its core is a fundamental debate about how to interpret and implement the 2nd Amendment of the United States Constitution. This amendment details that the citizens of the country have the right to bear arms. Activists for gun rights worry that a wave of gun control legislation on the state level will eventually lead to abuses in federal power. The concern is that an individuals right to own guns will be taken away, and with that the basic ability to defend him or herself and their families.
